Summer A/C Care for Orange County Drivers

On the coast the breeze helps, but drive a few miles inland on a late-summer afternoon and working A/C stops being a luxury. A little attention goes a long way.
Replace the cabin air filter
A clogged cabin filter reduces airflow and can cause musty smells. Many owner's manuals call for replacement every 15,000 to 30,000 miles, or more often in dusty conditions.
Run the A/C year-round
Using the A/C (or defrost, which often runs the compressor) regularly helps keep seals lubricated and helps clear fogged windows on marine-layer mornings.
Warm air usually means a leak or failed part
A/C is a sealed system. If it's low on refrigerant, it's leaking somewhere. A top-off may work briefly but doesn't fix the cause, and can mask a problem that gets more expensive. A proper check looks for the leak and tests the compressor, fans and controls.
Signs it's time for a check
- Air is cool but not cold, especially at idle
- Clicking, grinding or squealing when the A/C engages
- Water dripping inside the car
- Musty or sweet smells from the vents
Park smart
Sunshades and cracked windows (when safe) reduce the heat the system has to fight when you get in.
