Check Engine Light & Engine Diagnostics
A glowing check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a misfire that is damaging your catalytic converter. Reading the code is only the first step. At Jim's Automotive Specialties we use the code as a starting point, then test the system it points to so you pay for the right repair, not a guess.

Common signs & symptoms
- Steady check engine light (have it checked soon)
- Flashing check engine light (reduce speed and get it looked at right away; this usually means an active misfire)
- Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power
- Worse fuel economy than usual
- A new smell, noise or vibration that showed up with the light
How we handle it
We start by listening to what you have noticed: when the light came on, whether anything feels different, and what work has been done recently. Then we read stored and pending codes, look at live data and test the components involved. Once we know the cause, we call you, explain what we found and what it will take to fix, and put it in a written estimate. Nothing gets repaired until you say yes.
Good to know
If the light is flashing or the temperature gauge is climbing, pull over somewhere safe and call us at the shop. Driving on a severe misfire or an overheating engine can turn a moderate repair into an expensive one. Read more in our guide What your check engine light is trying to tell you.
