10 Questions to Ask Your Mechanic Before Approving a Repair

A good shop welcomes questions. Here are ten that help you understand what you're paying for.
- What exactly is wrong, and how did you confirm it? You want to know the test, not just the code.
- Can you show me the problem or the old part? In California you can ask for your replaced parts back (some warranty or core parts may be exceptions). Ask when you approve the work.
- Is this a safety issue, or can it wait? Ask them to rank the items.
- What happens if I don't fix it now?
- Can I get that in writing? California requires a written estimate before work begins.
- What's included in the price? Parts, labor, fluids, shop supplies, taxes.
- What kind of parts will you use? OEM, aftermarket or used, and why.
- Is there any warranty on this repair? Ask for the terms in writing.
- When will it be ready, and will you call me if anything changes?
- Is this on my manufacturer's maintenance schedule? Helpful for "recommended" services.
Red flags
Pressure to decide on the spot, vague answers, or a long list of "urgent" items on a car that drives fine are all reasons to slow down and ask more questions.
