7 Brake Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Brakes usually give plenty of warning before they fail. Here's what to listen and feel for.
1. High-pitched squealing
Many brake pads have a small metal wear indicator that squeals when pads get thin. Schedule an inspection soon.
2. Grinding or scraping
Often means pads are worn through and metal is contacting the rotor. Get it checked right away; this damages rotors quickly.
3. Soft or spongy pedal
Can indicate air or moisture in the brake fluid, a leak or a hydraulic problem. Treat this as urgent.
4. Pulling to one side
A sticking caliper, a collapsed hose or uneven pad wear can pull the car when you brake. Alignment or tire problems can mimic this too.
5. Vibration or pulsing
Often uneven rotor surfaces. It's uncomfortable and can lengthen stopping distances in an emergency.
6. Brake warning light
Could be low fluid, a parking brake that's still engaged or an ABS fault. Low fluid often points to worn pads or a leak.
7. Burning smell after driving
After a long downhill it can be normal. In everyday driving it may mean a dragging caliper or a stuck parking brake.
How often should brakes be inspected?
A good habit is to have them looked at whenever your tires are rotated or at least once a year, and any time you notice one of the signs above.
